Why is periodontitis dangerous?

Detect early, treat in time

The earlier we detect the disease, the more can be preserved. Timely treatment can stop the progression of the disease and secure your teeth for the long term.

Jawbone that has already receded cannot be restored.

Thorough examination

Getting to the root of gum health

With a careful examination of the periodontium, we detect inflammation at an early stage. This allows periodontitis to be treated in a targeted and tooth-preserving way.

  • Measurement of the gum pockets
  • Gentle cleaning of the root surfaces
  • Aftercare that secures the treatment outcome

Treating periodontitis in a targeted way

How we treat periodontitis

Four steps from the initial diagnosis to lasting stabilisation, individually tailored to you.

Early detection & prevention

With regular diagnostics, we identify risks early, before the damage becomes greater.

Individual therapy

Every diagnosis is unique. We develop a treatment concept tailored to you.

Gentle & targeted cleaning

Deep cleaning of the periodontium with modern methods, gentle yet thorough.

Long-term aftercare

Recall appointments and professional teeth cleaning (PZR) secure the outcome for the long term.

Holistic, with a focus on the periodontium

We stabilise bone and gums and slow their regression. In doing so, we take risk factors such as smoking, metabolic disorders or stress into account in your preventive care.

Who is particularly at risk?

Risk factors for periodontitis

4–6× increased risk for smokers
01Oral hygienePoor or incorrect oral hygiene encourages bacterial inflammation.
02Tobacco useSmokers have a four to six times higher risk of developing periodontitis.
03Blood sugarPoorly controlled blood sugar levels are among the common triggers.
04PregnancyHormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the risk.
05Mouth breathingConstant mouth breathing dries out the tissue and weakens its defences.
06Teeth grindingStress-related grinding places additional strain on the periodontium.
07DietAn unbalanced diet affects dental health.
08GeneticsGenetic factors also play a role in predisposition.

After a thorough examination, we assess your individual risk and help you to minimise it.

General information & causes

Understanding periodontitis

If gum inflammation persists over a longer period of time, it can spread to the periodontium and thereby trigger periodontitis. This is a bacterial inflammation which, if left untreated, leads to gum recession and bone loss, and can ultimately result in tooth loss through loosening. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth that adhere to the teeth and gums and multiply there.

When periodontitis affects one or more implants, this is referred to as peri-implantitis. Here too, the implant can be lost if left untreated.

  • Poor or incorrect oral hygiene
  • Tobacco use; smokers have a four to six times higher risk of developing periodontitis
  • Poorly controlled blood sugar levels
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • Mouth breathing
  • Stress-related teeth grinding
  • Unbalanced diet
  • Genetic factors

At our practice, after a thorough examination we provide you with an assessment of your individual periodontitis risk and help you to minimise it.

Through the progressive destruction of the periodontium, untreated periodontitis leads to tooth loss in the long term.

As it is a bacterial infection, it can also be transmitted between partners or from parents to children.

Studies also show links with cardiovascular disease, strokes and premature births.

After treating periodontitis, a closely spaced "recall" schedule for regular professional teeth cleaning, together with optimal oral hygiene at home, is of the greatest importance. Only in this way can a flare-up of periodontitis be prevented.

Tooth decay (caries) and periodontitis are two different diseases of the teeth and the periodontium.

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that attack the tooth enamel and create cavities in the tooth. If left untreated, it can reach the tooth nerve.

Periodontitis, on the other hand, does not affect the tooth itself, but the gums and the periodontium. The tissue around the tooth becomes inflamed, causing the gums to recede and the bone to be gradually broken down. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.

Thorough. Gentle. Reliable.
